Leaving Fremantle on 22/12/19 was tremendously exciting. We were 48 hours behind the fleet and racing against two other yachts Sanya and Unicef.
We were going to be compared with the timeline of all the other yachts to determine race positions at the finish.
Leaving the harbour there was plenty of room between the yachts but as we headed to the turning point that distance reduced considerably.
We were closes to the turning point and effectively completed the sailing equivalent of a hand brake turn round the point.
All very exciting.
We then had 5 days beating against the wind. Meaning we had to sail into the wind to make any progress.
I’ve tried to think of an exercise for you to experience a little of the effect of this manoeuvre.
So slap your hand against your thigh as hard as you can every 20 seconds then imagine that feeling and noise magnified to the size of a yacht. It was proper crash, bang , wallop.
Then consider moving, eating, sleeping at a 35 degree angle. Only try this one with assistance.
Ask someone to hold you at that angle and clean your teeth. Very messy. Try preparing a cup of tea!
